Submissions are open year-round! Please read on for our submission guidelines.

Content on The Humming originates from invitation, referral from past contributors, and unsolicited submissions.
We select on a bimonthly basis. Our next edition is out November 1st, 2017.

Word limit is open, with length being appropriate to the piece.

GENERAL DISCLAIMER: If you submit your work for publication, you agree to give us rights to publish it at any time on any of our platforms (web, social media, and within our annual print publication). If at any time you wish to revoke your submission post-publishing, we will honour that request, but can only do so via our web platforms...we won't be able to un-print it. All publishing decisions are made unanimously, with final selection generally given to the most authentic of pieces.

We'll send you an email within one month if you have been accepted!

Articles + Interviews

1. Submissions could include any kind of non-fic writing (especially of the experimental sort). These could be music reviews, opinion pieces, interviews, personal essays, etc. If your submission gets good feedback, we might ask you to make more frequent contributions via a recurring column.
2. All work rooted in facts should be credible/reliable. Biblios are encouraged, though they're not necessarily needed in your submitted work-- this will be dependant on each specific piece.
3. Photos accompanying your work are welcomed & encouraged!
4. We have no max submission number, but please upload individual submissions into separate files in your submission email. Ideally, submissions should be uploaded in .doc or .docx files. Photos accompanying your work can be attached in the email, and if you have a specific photo order you'd like, put instructions in the email body as well.
5. In your submission email body, write out a short bio of yourself so that we can identify you as a contributor. (If you'd rather not do this/would like to remain anonymous, that's ok, just let us know so in the email.)

Email thehummingmagazine@gmail.com with the subject line ARTICLES/INTERVIEWS to submit.

Poetry + Prose

1. Submissions accepted in the form of poetry, or creative prose-y pieces like short stories, longer stories/essays broken into separately submitted chapters, etc.
2. There is currently no max submission number for poetry or prose work, but if you submit +5 pieces, please just know it might take us a while to get back to you! For this reason, we recommend submitting no more than 5 pieces a month.
3. For longer written pieces, please consider breaking up your longer pieces into separately-submitted chapters that we could post gradually as a series.
4. In your submission email, upload individual submissions separately in .doc or .docx files.
5. In your submission email body, write out a short bio of yourself so that we can identify you as a contributor. (If you'd rather not do this/would like to remain anonymous, that's ok, just let us know so in the email.)

Email thehummingmagazine@gmail.com with the subject line POETRY/PROSE to submit.

Visual work

Submissions within our "visual work" section are highly varied. Below are general guidelines.
1. Submit visual art pieces (i.e. scanned paintings, photography, short films, photos of installations, drawings, mixed media, fashion, etc.) alone or paired with an artist's statement. We really like artist statements, but they're not necessary.
2. Photos should be sent in .jpeg files or something else that's easily downloadable (but good quality!). Films should be sent in an equally accessible format. Captions and artist's statements can be sent in the submission email.
3.  In your submission email body, write out a short bio of yourself so that we can identify you as a contributor. (If you'd rather not do this/would like to remain anonymous, that's ok, just let us know so in the email.)

Email thehummingmagazine@gmail.com with the subject line ART to submit.

AUDIO

1. Audio submissions can consist of individual songs/audio pieces, playlists, or any other kind of audio file.
2. Please email these things to us as mp4 files, or send us links to an easily accessible site (e.g. Soundcloud) that we can link to on our site.
3. In your submission email, please give us a description to go along with your submission.
4. Each month, we commission an individual to make a monthly playlist for the site. If you'd like to be this person, send us an email with the subject line PLAYLIST and a description of what you're hoping to do!
5.  In your submission email body, write out a short bio of yourself so that we can identify you as a contributor. (If you'd rather not do this/would like to remain anonymous, that's ok, just let us know so in the email.)
